About Us
African Women on Mission (AWOM) is a non-profit organization founded to reach out to the less privileged and vulnerable members of African families and communities. The organization was specifically established to enhance the life of the less privileged women, children, youths and orphans. African Women on Mission has a mandate to empower rural women with self-help skills, orientation and sensitization on improved standards of living. We work towards freeing the rural woman from unfair gender discrimination, sexual abuse and unfair cultural intimidations. Overall, we aspire to reposition the rural woman for greater contribution towards family and community improvement.
We passionately pursue the education of children and teenagers in rural communities, with special interest on the girl child. Our passion to promote the education of the girl child is predicated on common religious and cultural beliefs in many parts of rural Africa which compromise the female child’s education. Due to poor access to education in childhood, many rural African women are not capable of making far reaching positive decisions in in the home and society at large. Through our awareness campaigns and intervention programs African Women on Mission (AWOM) will significantly be able to improve the status of the African woman and rewrite the narratives of backwardness and helplessness. We believe that by emancipating more rural African women, we will improve the life and living conditions of many more rural families and communities.
We also work to improve rural schools and the quality of education for children and orphans, by providing the appropriate learning materials, while also improving school learning environment. Children, who, due to extreme poverty and negligence, are not able to attend school and stay in school successfully, get support from our back to school education programmes. Through our rural school improvement programmes, we seek to complement the efforts of government in improving education in rural communities that are subjected to poor learning conditions and facilities.
